"Hita Hitam Sukham Dukham Ayustasya Hita Hitam
Manam cha thacha yatrokatam ayurveda sa uchayate"
It means "Science is designated as Ayurveda, where advantageous and disadvantageous, as well as happy and unhappy states of life, along with what is good and bad for life, its measurement and life itself are described.
This healing system has three main focuses: healing and prevention of diseases and longevity.Ayurveda is not simply health care system but it is form of life style to maintain perfect balance. Ayurvedic merely does not treat symptoms but tries to cure from root cause and brings back individuals into equilibrium.
Objectives of Ayurveda: Ayurveda has two fold objective
Swasthasya Swathya Rakshnam
It means to maintain positive health of a healthy person
Aturasya Vikar Prashamanam
And to cure disease of a patient is objective of Ayurveda
Ayurveda tries to cure diseases by two methods
Shamana Chkitasa and Shodhna Chkitasa
Shaman Chikitsa, is used to subdue the vitiated Doshas, due to which any ailments may be produced. It is administered by using various medicinal herbo-mineral preparations
Shodhna treatments are done by Panchkarma(Five actions)
Panchakarma –Ayurveda’s Detoxification and Cleansing process
Panchakarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchakarma means "five actions". These 5 therapeutic treatments eliminate toxins from the body, they are : Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamoskshana. The series of these five therapies help remove deep rooted illness-causing toxins from the body and helps in balancing the doshas (energies that govern all biological functions) *Vamana: Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy which removes Kapha toxins collected in the body and the respiratory tract. This is given to people with high Kapha imbalance. Daily treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the toxins in an effort to finally eliminate them.
* Virechana (Purgation): Virechana is medicated purgation therapy which removes Pitta toxins from the body that are accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. It completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract. It is a safe procedure without side effects. Basti (Enema or Colonic Irrigation)
*Basti (Enema) is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments. It cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the doshas : Vata, Pitta and Kapha, through the colon. Basti is also highly beneficial as a rejuvenating treatment. Medicated oil or ghee and an herbal decoction is given as enema to clean the colon and increase the muscle tone. This treatment is provided for several days, based on the medical condition of a person.
*Nasya (Nose Cleaning) Nasya involves administration of medicated oil through the nose to cleanse accumulated Kapha toxins from the head and neck region. Based on the medical condition of a person, it can be given up to 30 days. *Raktamokshana:Raktamokshana is a procedure to cleanse the blood and is advised only in extremely rare conditions. It is NOT advised during general Panchakarma..
Panchakarma Diet Panchakarma is effective only if special detoxification diet is consumed along with the treatments. We at Ayurveda Retreat are very aware of this and every individual undergoing Panchakarma receives special diet which is monitored every day by the doctor.
Ashtaang Ayurveda(Eight branches of Ayurveda)
Ayurveda, being a vast science is divided into eight branches, which are collectively called as Ashtang Ayurveda. Like any other modern medicinal therapies, Ayurveda believes in specialized treatment for different body parts. Thus, the medicinal art have been categorized under branches that deal with psychiatry, internal medicine, treatment of eyes, ears, nose, throat and head, toxicology and rasayana balance of the biological humors, whereas disease is an imbalance of the humors. Áyurveda creates balance by supplying deficient humors and reducing the excess ones.Additionally, there are over 2,000 medicinal plants classified in India’s materia medica. A unique therapy, known as pañcha karma (five actions), completely removes toxins from the body. This method reverses the disease path from its manifestation stage, back into the blood stream, and eventually into the gastrointestinal tract (the original site of the disease). It is achieved through special diets, oil massage, and steam therapy. At the completion of these therapies, special forms of emesis, purgation, and enema remove excesses from their sites of origin. Finally, Ayurveda rejuvenates–rebuilding the body’s cells and tissues after toxins are removed.
1.Internal Medicine (Káyachikitsá)
This is related to the soul, mind, and body. Psychosomatic theory recognizes that the mind can create illness in the body and vice versa. The seven body constitutions and seven mental constitutions were delineated here: Váyu (air/energy), Pitta (fire), Kapha (water), Váyu/Pitta, Váyu/Kapha, Pitta/Kapha, and a combination of all three (tridosha).Iit was the main goal of Áyurveda. Six stages of the development of disease were known, including aggravation, accumulation, overflow, relocation, a buildup in a new site, and manifestation into a recognizable disease. Áyurvedic physicians can recognize an illness in the making before it creates more serious imbalance in the body. Health is seen as a balance of the biological humors, whereas disease is an imbalance of the humors. Áyurveda creates balance by supplying deficient humors and reducing the excess ones. Surgery is seen as a last resort Additionally, there are over 2,000 medicinal plants classified in India’s materia medica. Finally, Ayurveda rejuvenates–rebuilding the body’s cells and tissues after toxins are cleared.
2.Shálákya Tantra ( Ears, Nose, and Throat)
Sushruta reveals approximately 72 eye diseases, surgical procedures for all eye disorders (e.g., cataracts, eyelid diseases), and for diseases of the ears, nose, and throat.
3.Vishagara–vairodh Tantra(Toxicology)
Topics include air and water pollution, toxins in animals, minerals, vegetables, and epidemics, as well as keys for recognizing these anomalies and their antidotes.
4. Kaumaar Bhritya (Pediatrics)
In this branch prenatal and postnatal care of the baby and mother are discussed. Topics include methods of conception, choosing the child’s gender, intelligence, and constitution, and childhood diseases and midwifery.
5.Shalyá Tantra (Surgery)
More than 2,000 years ago, sophisticated methods of surgery were known. This information spread to Egypt, Greece, Rome, and eventually throughout the world. In China, treatment of intestinal obstructions, bladder stones, and the use of dead bodies for dissection and learning were taught and practiced.
6.Bhoot Vidya (Psychiatry)
A whole branch of Áyurveda specifically deals with diseases of the mind (including demonic possession). Besides herbs and diet, yogic therapies (breathing, mantras, etc.) are employed.
7. Vaajikarna (Aphrodisiacs)
This section deals with two aspects: infertility (for those hoping to conceive) and spiritual development (for those eager to transmute sexual energy into spiritual energy).
8. Rasayana (Rejuvenation)
Prevention and longevity are discussed in this branch of Ayurveda. Charak says that in order to develop longevity, ethics and virtuous living must be embraced.
Panchamahabhutas According to Ayurveda everything in life is composed of the Panchamahabhutas – Akash (Space), Vayu (Air), Jal (Water), Agni (Fire) and Prithvi (Earth). Omnipresent, they are mixed in an infinite variety of relative proportions such that each form of matter is distinctly unique. Although each element has a range of attributes, only some get evident in particular situations. Constantly changing and interacting with each other, they create a situation of dynamic flux that keeps the world going.Within a simple, single living cell for example the earth element predominates by giving structure to the cell. The water element is present in the cytoplasm or the liquid within the cell membrane. The fire element regulates the metabolic processes regulating the cell. While the air element predominates the gases therein. The space occupied by the cell denoting the last of the elements. In the case of a complex, multi-cellular organism as a human being for instance, akash corresponds to spaces within the body (mouth, nostrils, abdomen etc.); vayu denotes the movement (essentially muscular); agni controls the functioning of enzymes (intelligence, digestive system, metabolism); jal is in all body fluids (as plasma, saliva, digestive juices); and prithvi manifests itself in the solid structure of the body (bones, teeth, muscles, hair)
Sapt Dhatus
The Sapta (seven) Dhatus (tissues) elements form the pillars of the body that form the means of nourishment and growth while providing support to the body as well as the mind.
Rasa (fluid) Dhatu –Derived from the digested food, it nourishes each and every tissue and cell of the body and is analogous to the plasma.
Rakta (blood) Dhatu – Regarded as the basic of life, it is analogous to the circulating blood cells. It not only nourishes the body tissues, but provides physical strength and colour to the body.
Mansa Dhatu –-The muscle tissue, its main function is to provide physical strength and support for the meda dhatu.
Meda (fat) Dhatu – Consists of adipose tissue providing support to ashti dhatu. It also lubricates the body.
Asthi Dhatu – Comprising of bone tissues, including cartilages, its main function is to give support to the majja dhatu and provide support to the masma dhatu.
Majja Dhatu – Denoting the yellow and red bone marrow tissue, its main function is to fill up the ashti and to oleate the body.
Shukra Dhatu – The main aim of this reproductive tissue is to help reproduction and strengthen the body.
Since the dhatus support and derive energy from each other, affecting one can influence others. For instance, interference in the manufacture of the plasma affects the quality of the blood, which in turn effects the muscle. Each tissue type has its own agni, which determines metabolic changes in the tissues. And forms by-products, which are either used in the body or excreted. Menstural periods for example are a by-product of rasa. The tissues are also governed by the three doshas, and any imbalance in them also causes imbalances in dhatus. Heavy periods therefore can also be caused by the effects of the excess of Kapha on plasma
Reasons of Diseases
Ayurved names three main causes of disease – 'overuse', 'disuse' or 'misuse’ of faculties; 'errors in judgement'; and influence of seasonal changes. According to Ayurveda all human diseases can be classified into the seven broad categories, namely :
1.Adibalapravritta(Genetic) Consists Consists of ailments as obstinate skin diseases, hemorrhoids, diabetes, tuberculosis and asthma that arise primarily due to defects in the sperm (sukra) of the father – when it is called pitrija or the ovum (sonita) of the mother – when it is termed matrja. Undigested food, abnormal behaviour, addiction of any type and stressful situations affect the reproductive elements of both the male and female, resulting in a defective foetus.
2.Janmabalapravritta(Congenital) Nutritional disorder (rasakrita) and unfulfilled cravings of the mother during pregnancy (dauhrdya) If diet and / or conduct of the mother aggravates vata, the foetus might end up with deformities as kyphosis (hunchback), blindness and dwarfism; increased pitta may cause alopecia and yellowish pigmentation of skin.
3.Doshabalapravritta(Constitutional) Arise out of any dietary or behavioural disturbance brought about by an imbalance in any one of the three vital physical energies (Tridoshas) or the three vital mental energies (Trigunas). Thus constitutional disorders are of two types : somatic (Sharirika) & psychic (Manasika).
4.Sanghatabalapravritta(Traumatic) Undergoing any trauma causing experience – external or internal – leads to this.External trauma is induced by injuries inflicted by sharp instruments and bites of animals or venomous insects.Stress and overstrain lead to internal trauma.
5.Klabalapravritt(Seasonal) Brought about by changes in the nuances of seasonality.Sometimes the body fails to adjust itself to the sudden and abnormal climatic changes – extreme cold might lead to frostbite and rheumatic disease. While extreme heat may cause sunstroke or fever.
6.Daivabalapravritta(Infectious and Spiritual) Either born out of natural calamities as lightning, earthquakes, floods and the invisible, malignant forces of nature.Or contacted through sexual & physical intimacy and sharing of food, plates, bed, clothes, towels and cosmetics with effected friends & relatives. Or as a result sheer and jealousy.
7.Swabhavbalapravritta(Natural)
Even the healthiest of people are struck by hunger, thirst, sleep, death or senility.Brought about by functional, organic and natural changes in the body.
TRI DOSHA
Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water) are called tri dosha's-three vital energies prodominent in our body. These are back bone of Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatments.Tridosha are unique in Ayurveda. All three Dosha are found in all that is matter and therefore in all people. Tridosha govern all biological, psychological and physiological functions corresponding to the ‘Body’ and ‘Mind’ and act as a basic constituent and protective barrier in the body in its normal function.Dosha will vary for each person it bestows unique physical and psychological characteristics on each individual. No two people are or will ever be exactly the same and we cannot apply a common law to all. The Dosha that is most dominant at birth will affect our personality, immunity, characteristics etc.We are born with our own unique constitution (combination of the three Dosha) and this is termed Prakriti, which means ‘first creation, nature or creativity. The basic constitution or Prakriti of each individual is determined at conception and does not change during ones life span but remains unaltered, as it is genetically determined. However, due to changes in the environment, the combination of elements often changes in the body over time. These changes are identified by Ayurvedic diagnosis and are termed Vikriti. When our Vikriti differs from our Prakriti there is an imbalance and we are not living according to our true nature or purpose. It is in this state of Vikriti that we may first encounter disturbance in the form of dis-ease or distress without understanding why.
Like a thumb impression every body has its own Dosha prodeminent in his/her body.
Prakriti is the constitution (Body) type or temprament that one is born woth.Three main factors that governs prakriti are
